Change The Footer Links

This is an example what the appearance editor should look like with the Footer template loaded.

The footer links within our themes can be edited using the WordPress Appearance Editor. They are not encrypted code, but editing the footer will require a very basic understanding of HTML. Of course, we appreciate anyone leaving credit to Organic Themes, but we understand the desire to change or remove the links. Follow the steps below to edit or remove the links:

1. Navigate to the Appearance > Editor within the WordPress admin.

2. Choose the “Footer” template from the list of templates on the right.

3. Within the template, you will need to edit the HTML code. An HTML link within the footer will look similar to this:

<a href="http://www.organicthemes.com/themes/" target="_blank"><?php _e("Organic Theme Name", 'organicthemes'); ?></a>

4. Change the URL, title and theme name, or you can simply delete the code to remove the link from the footer.

5. Do NOT delete any <div> tags, unless you are familiar with the code.

6. Update the file, and refresh your site to see the changes.

I can´t change the fields, no matter what i cange wordpress says:

    “Not Acceptable

An appropriate representation of the requested resource /wordpress/wp-admin/theme-editor.php could not be found on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.”

I have a problem with the footer. I don’t understand why the margin is gone. Now “copyright” and is touching the edge. Before I have added a logo in footer widget 1. For some reason I have deleted. How can I fix it? And I don’t know which footer widget is for left and right side. 4 of them in Footer Widget only indicate footer widget 1 to 4. But in your tutorial, it shows us left and right side. The one I have is different.

It looks like you’ve deleted some code from the theme footer, particularly a closing “” tag. You can ask within our support forums for more guidance. I would suggest restoring the footer code and starting over without deleting any div tags.

I am having a hard time w/ the footer widgets. I’ll drag one to the homepage middle, and then it shows up on the left side. When I have one widget in left, middle, and right they aren’t spaced properly. Anyone dealt with this before?

Also, is it possible to but social media buttons in the footer, but NOT in a box? Just in a simple line?

    Thanks!

    • David

      Hi Nathan,

I’m not sure which theme you are using, but the middle footer widgets are left aligned. So if you add a widget to the middle without adding any widget to the left, the middle widget will float to the left. My suggestion would be to add an empty text widget in the left footer widget if you want to position a widget only in the middle location.

    Thanks!

I’d like to widen my post page. I ‘d like to not have the side bar widget content from my home page show up on the every post page, so that I have more room for pictures or a wide width picture slide. Currently the right side widgets show up on every post page. I’d just like it to be either only on the home page or better still there but pushed further to the right, as long as the widgets do not interfere with pictures and or slideshows. So overall,a wider page. I believe there is a wide view option for this theme but I cant’ seem to get it to work.
    thanks

      Hey there –

If you read the tutorial, it explains how to edit the footer links without the use of the plugin.

      Thanks!

There does not seem to be a footer option? I have the Studio Theme. Only options are: Widgets/Menus/Theme Options/Header/Background.
I would like to remove the footer.
    Thank you in advance.

@Lyn Yu – you have to go into Appearance – Editor … it’s not something you do from the ‘customize theme’ panel… it’s a default tab on your dashboard for any wordpress theme. Under appearances, click on ‘editor’… it’ll then take you to a page with all of the code for whatever theme you’re using listed in a column on the right… find ‘footer.php’ – open it, and scroll to the bottom and you’ll see the aforementioned snippet of code there (eg: the screen shot included in the tutorial of this thread – highlighted in blue – right up top of this page)… I STRONGLY suggest you back up anything that you plan on editing FIRST. Just copy and paste it into a text editor (like notepad or whatever else) because trust me – I’ve been there… I’ve gotten cocky, thinking I knew what I was doing – …. errr, and lost everything!…. You’d be amazed at how much destruction can be caused by leaving out a single character! If you’ve got the default files backed up, you can screw your page up as much as you want and you’ll still have a way to save your @zz… Just Sayin’ ;-)

@Bunda – changing colors is easy! Honestly – go to the footer.php file in appearance-editor-footer.php and look around for either hex numbers (eg: #000000 or #ffffff – black and white, respectively) … there are a gazillion hex generators for coding colors in that format. Or, in some cases it’ll just say ‘white’, or ‘black’ lol… It’s all just different coding languages which I am by far and wide NOT claiming to be an expert in code languages – I know very little. But honestly, if you just sit down and force yourself to read through the coding, it’ll make more sense than you might think… this method to my madness doesn’t make me capable of writing code from scratch necessarily, but I can dang sure go in and take some stuff out or put some stuff in! It’s kinda fun, actually, if you’re a newb like me – to go in there and make changes (AFTER you back up the original files – let me just reiterate that once more! lol) because when it actually works? It’s SOOOO incredibly gratifying!

Ok, I gotta get busy and stop rambling. I’m probably confusing the hell out of everyone and their dog’s uncle’s cat’s brothesr anyway …. but I hope it helps in at least a very small positive way! lol
