Setup A Custom Menu

You can organize your pages, links and categories using the Custom Menus.
Organic Themes supports WordPress Custom Menus. Custom Menus are used to manage the order of your menu items. In addition to managing your pages, the Custom Menu also allows for the addition of categories, custom links and custom post types to the main menu of your site.
- Navigate to Appearance > Menus within the WordPress administration.
- Create a new menu by adding a “Menu Name” and saving the menu.
- Proceed by adding Pages, Categories and Custom Links to the new menu.
- Organize your menu by dragging and dropping the links to your desired locations.
- Make sure to save your changes when you are done.
A home link can be added to your menu using a custom link by applying “Home” as the label, and the address of your website as the URL.
For more information on setting up a custom menu, please see the following WordPress Codex entries:

If you happen to drag one page twice how do you remove the second page from the menu? or do you have to create a whole new menu??
Click the down arrow for the page in the custom menu section. It should list a few options, including the option to remove the page from the custom menu.
Whats really needed in this menu section is for custom links to have an option to open the link in a new window. I’ve tried using Page Links Plus but it doesnt work with this theme.
Hey Mike,
Thanks for the suggestion. You are able to have a Menu Link open in a new window. To do this you will need to click on the “screen options” tab at the top of the page, then ensure that “Link Target” is checked. Now you will be able to click on the small arrow next to your Menu Link (after you have added it to a Menu), and you will see an option for Link Target where you can set it to “New window or tab”.
Hi, is there a way to have only one of my custom menus show on a specific page only?. Every time I add it to a widget, it comes to the whole website.
Thank you,
Good Day,
I have self hosted wordpress website. I recently installed the structure theme. (I am a novice and my knowledge is limited.)
I really like the theme, and I read the tutorial on how to add a featured image to my posts.
I follow all the instructions and I added successfully the featured image in all of my posts.
But, I have 2 problems, the first one is that the featured image never shows up on the grey square, but shows up in the post below it. The second problem is that the featured images only show in selected posts and not in others.
I followed all directions, searched forums and no one seemed to have this problem.
can you please help me?
This is where the problem happens:

Thank you for your help!
all the best

Unfortunately your website is not self hosted. It is the free version of the Structure Theme offered on wordpress.COM which we are unable to provide support for. I would recommend consulting the wordpress.COM forums. Thanks!

Hi,
I am using the free version of this theme. I’m just wondering how to make the categories come up in the navigation bar . i.e. beside where home is on the template.
Thank you
Hi,
I installed v3 of the Portfolio Theme but can’t figure out how to change the template of a category. Basically, I’m trying to mimick the layout of the Identity page/category(?) on the demo.
Please help!
Thanks,
Michael
Using the instructions above, you will need to create a custom menu, and then add a category to that menu (not a page). You can then choose how many columns you would like the portfolio to be displayed in within the theme options.
Why can’t I add a custom menu to my Studio Theme? I can tell from the demo that it should be possible. On the backend it says that this theme supports 0 menus. What are my options?
Hi Anna,
The Theme supports one custom menu (‘out of the box’), regardless of that message.
Thanks,
Socrates
We are using the organic theme and I see the same message under theme locations on the left,
Your theme supports 0 menus. Select which menu appears in each location.
there is a save button, but no options to select.
what does this are do/ change?
Hi
I am in the process of building a website using the Portfolio Theme.
I am trying to add a new page as a parent so it appears as a submenu. The page is not appearing in the menu as a dropdown?
Help please?
Many thanks
Wendy
Do you have multiple custom menus? You can only have one custom menu, and make sure you save the custom menu after making changes.
Hi David,
Could you please let me know if it is possible to install extra custom menus to use in the sidebars of the website? Maybe via plugins or something? Do you have a solution? Please, I’m stuck here. I didn’t expect to buy this template and end up being disappointed because only one menu can be incorporated.
Please help! Many thanks in advance, kind regards, Judith
hi there
im thinking about purchasing your “Natural” theme to use on a website I am updating, but before i do i wanted to ask a few questions.
1. Is the menu bar color customizable to any colour? custommize heading colour?
2. I need to use a background image. Would i be able to do this // http://hlm.ronaldacevedo.com/
3. Is there a Natural theme customize platform within WordPress? or do I have to change layout.css code?
kind regards

Hi there!
Is it possible to have a background image for menus?
SS
I am using the business theme. I have created pages and categories. When trying to create the menu the catagories are not showing up, only the pages. I want in my menu bar a drop down arrow with sub pages.
You must apply the categories to posts before they are visible to add to your custom menu.
Hi –
I just installed the Portfolio theme and wordpress is telling me “Your theme supports 0 menus.” I can add menus but they don’t appear on my site’s page after I save. Am I missing something? Thanks!
The custom menu will work for the top navigation regardless of the notification.
I have the same problem as Laura. My Studio theme states 0 menus and gives me only the option of HOME and SAMPLE PAGE in Pages.
Hi,
I am using version 3.1.3 of the non-Profit theme, and it is not giving me the option putting my customized menu, It says”Your theme supports 0 menus. Select which menu appears in each location.” Please temm me how can i put my costomized menu there?
The custom menu will work regardless of the message.
Hi, i bought th erestaurant theme and i am trying to customize de main index at the top of the page. In your tutorial it says that I could customize this on appearence, menu settings, but there is not such option in there. I have a Menus option, and there i see that my theme supports 0 custom menús. I understand that this main index is not a menu, but i only see pages showing up in there, i want to add categories to, can you help me out please?
ok, I now have my categories added up on the main index but i find another difficulty, How can I make those to appear in a different order? I want them to appear after the pages, not before! thanks
ohh hahah nevermind! got it
In case any other had the same questions i did.
1.- you have to have posts on the category if you want it to appear
2.- on the menus you create the menu, i named it main index, i dont know if this had something to do. and then you order the items in there
I purchased the Natural theme and am trying to set up a custom menu. I’m following the tutorial instructions and have added the menu items. But under pages, there isn’t anything listed there?? And I don’t see a way to add any??
The custom menu options are under Appearance, not Pages.
Hi
I’m using the Organic Structure theme. I would like to feature different sub links relevant to each page within the right column on various pages. By the way, I have created the site as a business website, not a blog and haven’t been using ‘posts’. I’m only using ‘pages’.
When I go to Appearance – Menus and create a new menu by clicking on the + at the top of the page and then I select a page to be featured as part of this menu, this new menu then incorrectly *replaces* the main menu as well as appears within the right column (correct) on one of my pages. How do I ensure that the menu I created initially continues to show as the main menu and is not replaced by another menu?
Thanks very much.
Lee
Hi Lee,
We will be happy to answer your questions within our support forum. Thanks!
I have created multiple menus (3) for 3 levels of memberships, yet under the TOP LEFT Sidebar under APPEARANCE / MENUS, entitled “THEM LOCATIONS” I get the message: “Your theme supports 0 menus. Select which menu appears in each location.”
It’s imperative that I have 3 menus to select from, dependent on membership level. PAGE Menus just don’t cut the mustard for this implementation, and I have been setting this site up for 2 weeks, non-stop!

I’m used to having more than one menu and being able to pick which one will feature as the menu on my home page. That was with the free version offered on WordPress.com. My premium Structure theme however doesn’t seem to have that option. If I have more than one it picks (seemingly at random) which menu to show on the home menu.
Hello,
Just wondering if there is a way to create multiple columns in a drop-down menu? I’m currently using the Magazine theme.
Thanks,
Aaron
Not without heavy customization to the navigation CSS.
Hi, Im starting to learn how to use my new template, I bought the Portfolio Theme,
I have saved the widgets I want to appear in the right side bar, but they don’t appear in my pages. How do I do it? How to include widgets in my side bar?
thanks
hey
i have the Options theme and when i create sliders all my images are huge. i thought timthumb automatically resized images to fit the location??? i changed all the permissions the tutorials recommended. cant get this to work. i’m obviously not a web designer. any ideas?
Dear Sir or Madam,
I need to change the font (bold or larger size) on menu words. How could I do that?
JB
The font can be changed in the stylesheet. We can offer more guidance in our support forums. Thanks!
Hi,
What is the benefit to setting up the home page through the custom links?
Thanks,
Stacey
Also, I can’t find a tutorial on setting up the slider, and to be honest, I’m not finding the process intuitive. I can’t see how to set the slider on the home page – I’m wondering if there is a chance that my home page is not registering as THE site homepage….
It would be helpful if you showed screenshots of how your example above would appear. Is there anything that describes the relationship between pages, categories, custom? I am figuring out through trial and error, would save some time.
Non of my pages comes up to make a menu. I have created 7 pages but with the organic restaurant theme it doesn’t seem to let you make a menu with all the pages so they appear across the bar on each page.
Anyone know how to fix this or create a menu?
i just created a self hosted blog on wordpress.org. i want to add multiple menus to the primary menu bar, such as yours shows Home, Themes, Showcase, Support etc. But i can just add one. If i add another menu and select primary again in theme location, it replaces the first menu instead of adding another one horizontally. it’s the same issue if i try to add a menu to the secondary location. it replaces the first one so i can only have one menu in each menu location. Please help!! Im using the Oxygen theme, and havent uploaded any posts yet. Thanks!
Hi Amina,
We don’t have a theme called the ‘Oxygen’ theme, but I suspect what you want to do is create one menu, then add items to that menu. Don’t create multiple menus. If you want multiple menus in different locations, please contact the developers of the Oxygen theme.
Thanks!
Hi, I am using Organic Food theme. When I creates a menu, it’s ok. But when I add it to Theme Location in Menu 1 or Menu 2 then the does not appears any more. The existing menu vanishes and nothing can be seen at there.
But if I deselect menus from the Theme Location then previous menu appears again.
What can I do plz?
Hi Fauzia,
We don’t have an ‘Food’ theme, but I’m assuming you mean the ‘Shop’ theme? If you could submit a support ticket, we’ll be able to help you with this (http://www.organicthemes.com/support).
Thanks!
Hello!
I’m using Magazine theme and have a problem with header menu.
I have main pages and sub pages which should appear when I mouse over the main pages in the header.
But they don’t, the header shows only main pages with a small dot next to them that indicates the page contains more sub pages.
Since it(the drop down) worked when I put all the pages into custom menu not in the header but on the right side bar as a widget, I changed my main header to menu, but it still doesn’t work. The header doesn’t show all the sub pages.
My website: http://www.maumberlin.org
Could anybody help this? Thank you!
Hi, I want to change the color of my main menu buttons. Been trying to find the font color code in the Editor but haven’t been able to locate it. Can you tell me where the code to change the font colors of the menu can be found? Thanks.
Kathy,
If your theme has color options, you can do so via Appearance –> Theme Options –> Colors. Otherwise, you can do so by adding the ‘.menu a’ and ‘.menu a:hover’ selectors.
Thanks!
I would like to change my menu so that it is larger, and more bold. It seems that the default settings have it very small and in a light gray font, very hard to navigate from the page.
Please help. Thanks!
Hi inayogini,
You can manipulate the menu via the ‘#navigation’ (or #navbar)’, ‘.menu a’ and ‘.menu a:hover’ selectors, in your style.css file.
Thanks!
Hi,
how can I make the subpages do appear (as by nonprofit shortcodes) on the menu bar?
thanks a lot
Hi Ricki,

Hello, I just came by to check out this site.
It appears really superb and I liked viewing it, thanks for the great article!
Hi
I was wondering if it’s possible to put different custom menus on each category page. For example if when you click on the “Food” category, on the left you could have a custom menu that would include “recipes, restaurants, tips, etc”, and on the next category “Fashion” you would have a different custom menu such as ” hats, purses, scarfs”?
Hi Catherine,
This would be possible through registering additional custom menus, in combination with conditional tags in header.php.
Thanks!
Hi
I just purchased the photographer theme, and I am trying to create a menu. I have added pages and the instructions say that I can reorder them and create sub menus by dragging and dropping, but it wont let me do this. The icon changes when I hover over the page names, but when I try to drag it, it just highlights all the text. Is there a way to fix this?
Thanks
Hi Clare,
Can you submit a support ticket (organicthemes.com/support), with a screenshot of your custom menu setup, and we will get this sorted.
Thanks!
